What is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic peptide developed in the 1990s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is a modified analogue of the natural immunopeptide Tuftsin, created with the aim of achieving more stable and targeted action on the central nervous system.
Its main role is to regulate anxiety, stress and emotional balance without acting as a classic sedative or stimulant. This makes it different from standard anxiolytics, which often suppress the nervous system.
Selank affects GABA, serotonin and dopamine by balancing neurotransmitter activity and supporting adaptation to mental and physical stress. It additionally influences neurotrophic factors such as BDNF, linking it to neuronal plasticity and cognitive function.
As a derivative of Tuftsin, Selank also retains an immunomodulating effect, making it a more complex peptide with simultaneous effects on both the nervous and immune systems.
Selank is approved for medical use in Russia, but outside these regions it is used mainly for research purposes.
What are the benefits of Selank?
Selank is aimed at stabilising the nervous system without compromising cognitive function.
Reduced anxiety without sedation
Supports the GABA system and reduces internal tension without causing drowsiness or dulling.
Improved concentration and mental clarity
Maintains focus and cognitive efficiency, especially under stress.
Stabilising mood
Affects serotonin and dopamine, leading to a more resilient emotional balance.
Improved adaptation to stress
Helps the nervous system respond more effectively to mental strain.
Support for memory and learning
It is associated with improved cognitive processes through its influence on neuronal plasticity.
Immunomodulating effect
Helps maintain balance in the immune system and its connection with nervous regulation.
Improved sleep by reducing tension
Indirectly supports easier falling asleep and a calmer sleep by reducing anxiety.
Clinical trials on Selank
Selank has been studied in a number of clinical and experimental models, mainly in the area of anxiety and stress adaptation.
Clinical observations in generalised anxiety show a reduction in symptoms and an improvement in emotional stability without developing dependence.
In experimental studies, an effect on gene expression associated with neurotransmitter systems has been established, supporting its deep regulatory mechanism.
Data also indicate modulation of the GABA system through allosteric influence, which explains the anxiolytic effect without classic sedation.
Additional effects on immune markers and inflammatory processes have also been observed, confirming the peptide’s dual neuro and immune profile.
In behavioural models, Selank shows reduced anxiety and improved adaptation to chronic stress.
Correct intake and dosage of Selank within a research protocol
Selank is administered via a subcutaneous injection depending on the protocol used.
In research practice, doses in the range of 250 to 500 mcg per day are most commonly used, with administration possibly being once daily or split into two doses, usually in the morning and early afternoon.
The duration of protocols is typically between 10 and 28 days, after which a break of 1 to 2 weeks is taken in order to maintain effectiveness and sensitivity.
Possible side effects of Selank
Selank is considered a well-tolerated peptide, with unwanted reactions being rare and usually mild.
The most commonly observed are mild headaches, short-term dizziness or a feeling of relaxation at the start of use.
In rarer cases, increased nervous excitability or temporary sleep changes may occur at higher doses.
In most cases, these reactions subside quickly with adaptation or dose adjustment.
